2011 NYC, DeadSleep is born Infused with raw emotion and a no-holds-barred attitude, DeadSleep stands apart from the rest by combining an old school hard rock sound with a new heavy metal twist. Breaking through the metal mold, the new album demonstrates Singer/Song writer Desi Pena’s potential not only vocally, but as an engineer and producer. Equipped with a cutting-edge thrash metal sound, “Falling to pieces“ album packs a punch. Using a combination of catchy and melodic lines, crushing guitar riffs and gut-wrenching screams, the hard-hitting speed beats will leave you white-knuckled. The resulting sound, from beginning to end, can only be described as a sheer heart attack of musical mayhem.
Raised in a family of musicians, Desi was playing drums by age 5, but eventually discovered his true passion as a guitar player. Over time, he refined his natural talent by studying guitar tablature for some of his favorite bands including Megadeth, Pantera, Metallica and many others. “My goal was always to nail every lead tight with the record” notes Pena. Listening to songs from DeadSleep, Desi’s efforts to emulate those influential legends has apparently paid off.
If there is one aspect to the album that stands out, it is Desi’s remarkable level of superior guitar skills displayed on tracks such as “The Chant“, “Someday” and “I.D.K.“ Being a fan of so many different bands throughout the years, ranging from hard rock to death metal, DeadSleep has incorporated a wide range of influences into the new album. Desi lists Marty Friedman, Dimebag Darrell, Zakk Wylde and John Petrucci as a few of the guitarists that have had the most influence on his personal style. While his metal roots are evident in the music, many of Desi’s songs exist in a realm outside of the typical metal genres
From the minute I heard Desi Pena (DeadSleep) on Rock Radio 993 in 2011 talking about his new project I was hooked. As I listened intently to his explanations and descriptions of his creative process I couldn’t help but want to know more, learn more. Three words kept running through my mind endlessly “he has it” what is it? The passion the drive the raw talent the musical gene that runs through his veins, the strive for excellence and perfection at all costs. Truly the complete package he isn’t just a guitar player or a singer he is an artist. You can hear it in his music the emotional rollercoaster, it’s a voice that shows pain and anguish, love and lust and when he transfers to screaming, we can feel his raw rage.
Talented, experienced and focused, DeadSleep Dez Album drops June 2012 and is scheduled to start his U.S & Canadian tour this year, bringing together a slew of extremely talented musicians.
